Despite the numerous researches and breast
implant
developments, breast augmentation operation is still rather risky.
According to the surgeons the procedure itself isn't really difficult
and takes 1.5-2 hours, but after the operation women are often
confronted by different complications. Apart from possible infection or
negative effects of anesthesia, there are also rupture, capsular
contracture, hematoma, necrosis, altered nipple sensation and even
cancer.
The shell of breast implant may deflate provoking saline solution
bleed. Breast implant rupture is quite unpredictable, it can occur both
after several months and after several years from the procedure. The
reasons are different: from the surgical ones like underfilling or
overfilling of the breast implant with solution, to physical like
excessive manipulation and trauma. Breast implant rupture may be also
caused by capsular contracture – the squeeze of scar tissue
around the implant. As a result breast can smart and change its shape.
In that case the implant must be removed without delay. Another
potential risk
is hematoma which most often results from infection and entail serious
consequences such as bruising, constant pain and swelling.
After breast augmentation procedure using breast implants, nipple
sensation can change from extreme sensitivity to total insensibility.
The effect usually lasts from several weeks to several months, but it
can be also permanent. According to the statistics, 1-2% of women
complain on breast sensitivity changes, and 3-10% – on the
altered sensation of nipples.
1-2% of women who undergo breast reconstruction are exposed to
necrosis. When dead tissue form around the breast implant and cover it,
a patient needs an urgent surgical correction. The breast implant is
removed and replaced. Necrosis can be caused by chemotherapy, smoking
or infection.
In addition breast implant can be an immediate cause of connective
tissue disease and excessive scarring. 6-7% of patients have intense
scars in the US. Scars are healed depending on breast size,
shape and many other factors. As one can see breast implants are not so
harmless as it is affirmed in advertising.
