According to the statistics, breast augmentation is the second, after
liposuction, most popular cosmetic plastic surgery in the US. Only in
2006 383,886 women pursued breast augmentation using breast implants.
Today's scientific development offers many breast implant options.
One can choose not only a convenient surgeon and a hospitable medical
center, but also the type
and size
of breast implants (silicone
or saline-filled), their placement (sub-muscular or sub-glandular),
shape (round or teardrop-like), texture (smooth or rough), the site of
the incisions or... whether there will be not incisions at all. Strange
though breast implant placement without scars is quite possible
nowadays. Thanks to Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA), invented
by Texas surgeon Gerald W. Johnson, patient has no post-operative
scars, and the procedure can stay unrevealed for others.
Transumbilical breast augmentation is performed using an endoscope
– a flexible tubular surgical instrument with camera which
serves
to examine the interior of organs. Breast implants are inserted through
the belly button, without leaving visible scars on the breasts and
decreasing the time of recovery therefor. The whole process is shown on
the monitor, and the surgeon can perform difficult tasks without making
long incisions.
Besides the lack of scars, there are many other advantages of
transumbilical breast implant placement, such as the lack of tissue
stress. The risk
of infection is minimized, as the incisions can't damage the milk
ducts. Recovery time is considerably shorter and is taking without
discomfort. Women who have chosen breast implant placement via TUBA can
sunbathe several days after the procedure in contrast to those whose
breast implants were placed through incisions, as the scar healing
process may last a year, and during this period of time breast
shouldn't be exposed to the sun. As no peri-areolar procedures with
nerve cutting is involved, the sensation of nipples remains the same.
In addition large breast implant won't result in such complications
as the extreme tightness of the breast envelope preventing circulation.
Despite its indisputable benefits, transumbilical breast augmentation
endured many unjust accusations. However, this procedure has the same
risks as the operation requiring incisions on the breasts or in the
armpits, and even less.
